Choosing the Right PAP Therapy: CPAP vs. BiPAP vs. APAP – A Comprehensive Guide

You and our doctors at Bogan Sleep Consultants in Columbia, SC, cannot simply choose the sleep machine that you want. The machine of choice for you has everything to do with the results of your tests, sleep study, and final diagnosis. In the end, it is the results of your testing that designates the sleep machine of choice for you.

CPAP

Our doctor may order a CPAP machine for you if you have obstructive sleep apnea. This machine keeps your breathing airways open while you sleep and ensures you receive sufficient oxygen.

Without the use of this machine, you place yourself at risk for heart disease and stroke due to decreased oxygen without this medical device.

Sleep apnea means your breathing is irregular while sleeping, or you stop breathing for several seconds only to take a sudden and deep breath. There are three types of CPAP machines.

  • Bi-level PAP: supplies two different pressures during breathing in and exhalation
  • Auto CPAP: self-regulates with different pressures
  • Adaptive servo-ventilation/ASV delivers breaths when necessary

BiPAP

This machine helps you breathe while asleep and delivers more air pressure when you stop breathing. This machine pushes air into your lungs to improve the oxygen level in your body.

It decreases the carbon dioxide you exhale. Our doctor may order a certain number of breaths per minute, and you can set your machine to deliver this number of breaths. Diagnosis of the following may mean you need BiPAP.

  • Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
  • Central Sleep Apnea
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

APAP

Our doctor may order an APAP machine if you don't get relief from your BiPAP or CPAP machine. Some reasons why our doctor may order an APAP versus a CPAP or BiPAP are as follows.

  • Tossing and turning while asleep
  • Deep sleeper
  • Drink alcohol before bed
  • Yo-yo dieting
  • Chronic stuffy nose/allergies.
  • CPAP doesn't work
  • Frequent air pressure changes
